Tulsa to Host World’s Top Axe and Knife Throwers for $60,000 Prize Event on ESPN

Tulsa, Oklahoma, 2024 – The world’s elite axe and knife throwers are set to converge in Tulsa, Oklahoma this spring for the highly anticipated World Axe and Knife Throwing Championships (WAKTC). The event, scheduled to take place from April 18-21, 2024, will be held at the brand-new WeStreet Ice Center and feature a staggering $60,000 prize pool.

The WAKTC event, organized in partnership with the World Axe Throwing League (WATL) and the World Knife Throwing League (WKTL), is poised to attract over 375 top-tier throwers from around the globe. The competition will feature 256 hatchet throwers, 128 big axe throwers, 128 duels teams, and 128 knife throwers, all vying for the championship titles and the chance to be featured on the ESPN broadcast.

“This event will not only be a fantastic way to introduce folks to the brand new WeStreet Ice Center, but a unique opportunity for Tulsa to be in front of global audiences via the ESPN broadcast,” said Joel Koester, Director of Sales for the Tulsa Sports Commission.

The WeStreet Ice Center, a 140,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility, is set to open in early 2024 and will serve as the practice facility for the Tulsa Oilers hockey team, the ‘AA’ affiliate of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. The venue will also feature a full-service restaurant, sports bar, and a virtual reality arcade, making it the perfect setting for the WAKTC event.

The Growth of the Championships

“In the past 7 years, I’ve watched the Championship grow from a streamed event with just a handful of participants to over 350 throwers with an ESPN broadcast,” said Sarah Sed, the incoming World Axe Throwing League Commissioner. “This tremendous growth is all because of our passionate community of throwers, affiliates, and the WATL support staff. I’m truly looking forward to my first World Championship as Commissioner in Tulsa.”

As the excitement builds, event organizers will release additional details in the coming weeks. Interested participants are encouraged to visit the WAKTC Player Portal for more information about the venue’s location and hotel blocks.
